ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A transitional housing program is open in the Duke City, providing a place to stay for people who may not feel safe or welcome at other shelters.
The Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico is opening Casa Lola, a transitional housing program that will allow six people to live in a home, rent free for up to 18 months. The organization been looking to open this kind of home for more than a decade. In 2022 they received a donation that allowed them to buy a 2,000 sq. ft. 3-bedroom home.
“Casa Lola is named after one of our participants who sadly lost her life shortly after losing her housing which is an all too common tale for people not only in Albuquerque, but in New Mexico,” said Michael Trimm, Executive Director Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico.
The application period opened up on January 29th by the end of the day there was a waiting list. Trimm says the project provides a stable and welcoming place for people to figure out their next steps, while making actionable steps towards whatever those next steps are. Now, they’re looking to expand the program.
