(NewsNation) — GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley stated that in vitro fertilization is a “personal decision between the physician and the parents.”
“Both of my children are from fertility. I am pro-fertility, and I am pro-family,” Haley said during an exclusive interview with NewsNation’s Leland Vittert. “What we don’t want to see is states all over the country do a knee-jerk reaction. … When it comes to fertility treatments, this is a personal decision between the physician and the parents. Period.”
Haley also reaffirmed her stance and said she does not endorse the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that said frozen embryos and fertilized eggs should be treated as children under state law.
“I see embryos as babies; other people may not see it that way. … But at the end of the day, we don’t need to have the government intruding in something like this,” she said.
The Alabama Supreme Court decision ruled that frozen embryos should be subject to legislation dealing with the wrongful death of a minor, stating that it “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.”
The court issued the majority opinion following a lawsuit brought on by a group of IVF patients whose frozen embryos were destroyed in December 2020 after a patient removed them from a cryogenic storage unit and dropped the embryos on the ground.
