(NewsNation) — Another high-profile Democrat is currently under investigation by the FBI, dealing another blow to the right-wing narrative that the Department of Justice is biased against conservatives.

Congresswoman and left wing “Squad” member Cori Bush is now facing a criminal investigation for alleged misuse of campaign funds on security services, a fitting situation given her continued support for the “Defund the Police” movement.

In response to the investigation, Bush asserted that she has used campaign funds, not federal tax dollars, for personal security services. She explained that her husband, with extensive experience in security, was retained as part of her security team at a fair market rate.

However, Bush has faced criticism in the past for hiring her husband as security, with reported payments exceeding $100,000 over two years, initially categorized as “security” payments and later as “wage expenses.”

The New York Times reported that Bush spent close to $400,000 on security, the highest among House members, in the months following the January 6 attack on the Capitol. When questioned about her substantial private security expenses as a supporter of defunding the police, Bush responded with a passionate defense, emphasizing the threats to her safety.

Bush is the latest high-profile Democrat to be targeted in a Department of Justice investigation. Other Democrats, including New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Sen. Bob Menendez and Hunter Biden, have also faced scrutiny for various issues ranging from campaign fundraising practices to bribery and influence schemes.

The argument that the Department of Justice is weaponized solely against Republicans becomes increasingly challenging to support, as prominent Democrats continue to be investigated by the agency. FBI Director Chris Wray, a lifelong Republican, directly addressed accusations of bias, asserting that the notion is baseless.

Expressing support for law enforcement agencies, the statement underscores the potential jeopardy posed by turning the FBI into a politicized caricature.

Bush is a lawmaker who called for police reform by using the death of Michael Brown, a teenager fatally shot in Missouri in 2014, as her focus. She invited Michael Brown’s father to last year’s State of the Union address and pushed to dismantle what she calls our “Racist and violent policing system,”

The Brown case was obviously unfortunate, but it was not police brutality, and it was not racism. The officer was never charged and all of the evidence supported the officers’ claim of self defense.

What’s also counterproductive on the other side is this silly rhetoric about a two-tiered system of justice.

It’s obviously not just Republicans being targeted. To suggest otherwise isn’t just ridiculous, it’s an insult to law enforcement.
