MIAMI (NewsNation Now) — There were shorter lines at the polls on Monday compared to early last week across Florida for early voting, but some locations still saw a steady stream of voters.
In Miami Beach, Florida voters said the average wait time was about fifteen minutes.
As of Monday, Republicans were leading when it comes to in-person early voting with more than one million Republicans already casting in-person ballots, compared to just under 767,000 Democrats
Almost 400,000 in-person early voters have no party affiliation.
With early mail-in voting in Florida, Democrats were in the lead as of Monday morning. About 1,788,000 Democrats mailed in ballots, compared to about 1,179,000 Republicans.
In Tampa over the weekend, it was almost a party atmosphere at several early voting locations.
Among those voting, was 32-year-old Ladron Porter.
Porter was in prison for five years and just regained his right to vote thanks to a new law in Florida that restored convicted felons voting rights after they pay off court costs.
The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition donated 1.5 million dollars in the Tampa area to pay off court fines. They say they have made it possible for about 67,000 convicted felons to vote.
“We don’t care who you vote for. We are non-partisan. You can be Republican, Democrat, Independent. You can be a space alien. All we want you to do is vote,” Ernest Johnson with Florida Rights Restoration Coalition said.
Early voting in Florida continues until Sunday.
