GASTONIA, N.C. (NewsNation Now) — With less than two weeks before the November election, President Donald Trump took his campaign to North Carolina, as well as broadcast television, on Wednesday.

Trump traveled to Gastonia to speak at a campaign rally at the municipal airport at 7 p.m. ET.

Officials told NewsNation affiliate WJZY that they’re estimating that 15,000 people could attend the campaign event. City officials said precautions are being put in place to make sure the event is safe for attendees. Guests will receive temperature checks, and masks will be made available.

The rally is planned an hour before a town hall with the president airs. Sinclair Broadcast Group is airing the pre-recorded discussion with Trump, moderated by “America This Week” host Eric Bolling, at 8 p.m. ET.

While North Carolina has a Democratic governor, the state is “purple” and has previously gone to the Republican nominee in nine of the last 10 presidential elections.

A NewsNation/Emerson poll out of the state last week found the two candidates tied, each polling at 48.9%. In rural areas of the Tar Heel State, Trump leads Biden 63% to 36%. In the suburbs, Biden leads Trump 51% to 46%. And in urban areas of North Carolina, Biden leads 64% to 34%.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden didn’t host any public events Tuesday, with none scheduled for Wednesday as well. However, his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris will be traveling to North Carolina Wednesday. She’s making two stops, one in Asheville and one in Charlotte, as Biden prepares for the final presidential debate on Thursday.

Former President Barack Obama is also filling the gap on the campaign trail for Biden. On Wednesday, he spoke at a drive-in rally in Philadelphia.
