SALT LAKE CITY (NewsNation Now) — Incumbent Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic opponent Sen. Kamala Harris debated over the future of the Supreme the first and only vice presidential debate.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to open hearings on Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

Pence expressed support for Barrett and her Christian faith.

“We hope she gets a fair hearing. We particularly hope that we don’t see the kind of attacks we see on her Christian faith that we saw before,” said Pence. “The Democratic Chairman of the Judiciary Committee before, when Judge Barrett was being confirmed for the Court Appeals, expressed concerns that the dogma of her faith lived loudly.

Harris focused her answer on the confirmation process, saying that a Supreme Court justice shouldn’t be confirmed during an election year.

“We are literally in an election. Over 4 million people have voted, people are in the process of voting right now. Joe has been very clear and as the American people are. Let the American people fill that seat in the White House and then we’ll fill that seat on the United States Supreme Court,” said Harris. “And to your point Susan, the issues before us couldn’t be more serious. There is the issue of choice and I will always fight for a women’s right to make a decision about her own body. It should be her decision and not that of President Donald Trump or the vice president, Michael Pence.”

Harris serves on the committee which will hold hearings on Barrett. Pence, as the president of the Senate, would break a tie, if the vote was split 50-50.
