MILWAUKEE (NewsNation) — President Joe Biden has started a two-day swing through Wisconsin and Michigan to create momentum for his reelection campaign.

Biden heads first to Milwaukee on Wednesday; however, details on his visit have not been released yet.

Milwaukee is now home to Biden’s state campaign headquarters, marking the first time in two decades a Democratic presidential candidate has chosen Wisconsin’s largest city as it base of operations. Biden campaign officials told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the reason for selecting Milwaukee as the home base for campaigning in Wisconsin is to focus on appealing to Black and Latino voters and suburban women.

It’s worth noting that the Republican National Committee (RNC) will hold its convention in Milwaukee in July. This is where former President Donald Trump will formally accept the Republican nomination after securing enough delegates in Washington, Georgia and Mississippi on Tuesday night.

Trump’s team reacted to his victories, stating that now is the time to focus on winning in November.

Additionally, Biden secured the Democratic Party’s nomination, paving the way for a rematch in the general election. Following Tuesday night’s results, Biden released a statement saying, “Our county is in a moment when the threat former President Trump poses is rather than ever.”

According to recent polling from The Hill, in a 2024 election matchup, Trump leads Biden in Wisconsin by about three points. However Biden seems to have the advantage among independent voters. The same trend holds for voters under 30.

The chairmen of both the Republican and Democratic parties in Wisconsin emphasize that this is just one reason why the state is crucial to winning the presidency.

“In every poll out there, not just here in Wisconsin but clear across the country, Joe Biden is upside down on inflation, on the border, on crime in cities, the issues go on and on and on,” said Wisconsin Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Brian Schimming.

“The combination of common sense building the economy from the middle out of the bottom up and freedom and democracy, that has been the heart of the Democratic message here,” said Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler.

Biden is expected to head to more campaign events Thursday in Michigan, another crucial swing state.
