(NewsNation) — A newly released video shows confusion among authorities in the immediate aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, posted the bodycam video on social media site X on Tuesday.

The video, obtained from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit, shows authorities on the roof of a building where the gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed moments after he wounded Trump and killed a firefighter at a campaign rally July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. 

“Beaver County sniper … sent the pictures out. This is him,” someone off-camera is heard saying as Crooks’ body is seen on the roof next to a trail of blood and near what appears to be a rifle.

“Rifle’s right there,” someone says, pointing at the weapon. 

Shortly after, a man who appears to be a Secret Service agent is seen talking to local authorities and asking about a bike nearby on the ground. 

“Was he on that bike,” someone is heard asking. Then, someone replies, “We don’t know.”

Assassination attempt investigation

The shooting is under investigation by both federal authorities and Congress, and the House Homeland Security Committee held a hearing Tuesday to analyze the moments leading up to and following the shooting.

“This is very much an ongoing, complex and dynamic investigation. Each day, I learn multiple new facts as we uncover new information as the investigation progresses,” Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris and Patrick Yoes, the national president of the Fraternal Order of Police, testified.

Additionally, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Tuesday a bipartisan effort to investigate the assassination attempt quickly. Johnson said he and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries approved a House task force of seven Republicans and six Democrats to investigate.

Johnson’s task force is the latest effort to investigate the assassination attempt against Trump.

An independent commission will also review the Secret Service’s performance before, during and after Trump’s assassination attempt.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the bipartisan commission members, including former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and several advisers to former President George W. Bush.

The panel will have 45 days to review the planning actions of the Secret Service, state and local authorities during the rally.

Secret Service director resigns

The bodycam footage was released on the same day Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following calls to step down from lawmakers in both political parties who questioned the agency’s actions before, during and after the shooting.

On Monday, she testified publicly in front of the House Oversight Committee after a week of closed-door interviews. Admitting that the agency “failed,” Cheatle told lawmakers that she takes full responsibility for any security lapse on the day of the attack.

“As an agency, we are fully cooperating with the FBI’s investigation, the oversight you have initiated here, and conducting our own internal mission assurance review at my direction,” she said.
