2024 DNC headliners: Who is speaking at this year's convention?

(NewsNation) — The Democratic National Convention is just days away from kicking off in Chicago, and while the stage is set, the list of event speakers has yet to be fully unveiled.

The four-day convention starts Aug. 19, a month after the conclusion of the 2024 Republican National Convention.

Vice President Kamala Harris became the official nominee of the Democratic Party on Aug. 2 following a virtual roll call in which she secured enough delegates to get the nomination. Harris has since announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.

More than 50,000 attendees are expected to visit Chicago, with at least 5,000 delegates expected in attendance.

Convention organizers have a lot to fit in the prime time of the four days in addition to the presidential and vice presidential nomination acceptance addresses.

Here’s what we know so far about who is taking the stage at the DNC:

Monday, Aug. 19

President Joe Biden: Set to headline the first night of the 2024 DNC, President Joe Biden is scheduled to give a speech touting his relationship and accomplishments with Harris.

The address is set to be the centerpiece of the Aug. 19 programming.

Convention organizers were pressed for time trying to figure out where to fit in a Biden address once he withdrew from the presidential race just weeks before.

Up until that moment, Biden’s role was to wrap up the convention with his nomination acceptance speech on Aug. 22.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: Former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is also scheduled to speak on Monday.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson: The host city’s mayor is slated to welcome Democrats to the convention. He will showcase how Democrats across the Blue Wall are on the frontlines, fighting for our freedoms and our future.

Tuesday, Aug. 20

Former President Barack Obama: The New York Times reported that former President Barack Obama will headline Tuesday night.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama: Michelle Obama has addressed every party convention since her husband was nominated in 2008, with her previous addresses all garnering prime speaking slots, according to Axios.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker: As the DNC takes place in Chicago, it’s expected that Illinois’ governor would attend the event. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is also expected to address delegates at the convention, but the time at which he will speak has yet to be confirmed.

Wednesday, Aug. 21

Vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz: It’s a tradition that the vice presidential pick gives their acceptance speech as the Wednesday headliner. Walz will follow a speech by former President Bill Clinton.

Former President Bill Clinton: As a precursor to Walz’s vice presidential nomination acceptance speech, Bill Clinton is expected to address the economy under Biden, Axios reported. He has often been regarded as one of the better “setup speakers,” the report said.

Thursday, Aug. 22

Vice President Kamala Harris: Closing out the DNC, Harris will formally accept the Democratic Party’s nomination Thursday evening.

Harris will be marked in history as the first Black woman and first Indian American to accept a party’s nomination, NBC News reported.

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff: Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, is expected to give a speech at this year’s DNC. It has been reported that he will introduce Harris ahead of her acceptance speech.

Who else will speak at the DNC?

There are several other people who have been confirmed to speak at this year’s DNC. However, the committee has not yet set official times.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries will also participate in the convention, sources confirmed to NewsNation.

In honor of former President Jimmy Carter, his grandson, Jason Carter, is also slated to speak at the convention, NBC News reported.
