(NewsNation) — Democratic Rep. John Garamendi of California defended President Joe Biden‘s capabilities despite concerns about the president’s recent debate performance.

“My perspective on this is that the president is strong, is capable and will continue to perform as he has spectacularly as president,” Garamendi said Wednesday on “NewsNation Now.

The congressman acknowledged Biden had a “bad performance” in the debate but argued that debating is “not one of the tasks of a president.” He pointed to Biden’s recent speeches and international appearances as evidence of his competence.

Garamendi urged patience, saying, “We’re going to know over the next couple of weeks exactly what the situation is.” He highlighted upcoming opportunities for the public to observe Biden, including a sit-down interview with ABC News and press conferences.

The lawmaker also criticized former President Donald Trump‘s campaign rhetoric and policy proposals.

“Trump did not answer one question. He simply went back to two or three major talking points and then spent the rest of the time lying about his position,” Garamendi said.

When asked about potential Democratic replacements for Biden, Garamendi dismissed the speculation as premature.

He emphasized his long-standing familiarity with Biden, stating, “My personal view of this, knowing this man for the last 35 years now, is that he is very capable of being president.”
