(NewsNation) — Vice President Kamala Harris has raised more than $1 billion since the launch of her presidential campaign, her campaign said, outpacing her opponent former President Donald Trump in July fundraising.
The Harris campaign has been working to raise funds following President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside from the presidential race and endorse the vice president. With a short time remaining before the November election, the campaign is faced with the task of catching up to a candidate who has been campaigning all year.
In a news release, the Harris campaign announced it raised $310 million in July, compared to the Trump campaign’s $138.7 million for the month.
The Harris campaign also reported $377 million cash on hand, $50 million more than the $327 million Trump’s campaign reported having in its war chest.
Harris’ campaign also touted grassroots fundraising, noting that two-thirds of the funds raised came from first-time donors, suggesting a newly energized base of voter support following Biden’s decision to withdraw and Harris’ role as the presumptive nominee.
It’s a turnaround for the Democratic Party, which saw a drop in donations following Biden’s performance in the first presidential debate. The donor dip came as the Biden campaign was working to keep pace with a fundraising wave for Trump following his conviction of 34 felonies in New York.
According to the Harris campaign, 94% of donations were under $200, with teachers and nurses the most common donors. Younger voters were also showing up, with more than 10 times the number of Generation Z and eight times the number of millennial voters compared to June.
“From historic grassroots fundraising to hundreds of thousands of new volunteers, one thing is clear as Vice President Harris continues to prosecute the case against convicted felon Donald Trump – voters are fired up and ready to beat Trump again this November,” said Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison. “The majority of this grassroots fundraising came from first-time donors who have been inspired to chip in to support Vice President Harris’ historic candidacy.”
