Harris speaks about plans for growing middle class
- Harris talked about struggle middle class families face in Pittsburgh
- She's also talked about her economic policy at campaign stops in NC, NH
- Harris has slight lead over Trump in recent polls
(NewsNation) — Vice president and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris detailed more aspects of her plans to improve life for middle-class Americans at another stop in Pittsburgh Wednesday.
“I intend to chart a new way forward and grow the middle class,” Harris said. “Donald Trump wants to take America backwards.”
Trump’s agenda, Harris said, would weaken the economy and hurt working people.
“For Donald Trump, our economy works best if it works for those who own the big skyscrapers,
not those who actually build them,” Harris said. “Not those who wire them. Not those who mop the floors.”
Harris said she plans to cut taxes for middle-class families, as well as introduce tax breaks. This includes $6,000 for new parents during the first year of their child’s life and giving all working people access to paid leave. In addition, Harris reiterated a plan she previously floated to construct 3 million homes and rentals.
“If we want the middle class to be the growth engine of our economy we need to restore basic economic security for middle-class families,” Harris said.
Harris has been rolling out her economic policy at a number of campaign events. In Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris first introduced what she calls her opportunity economy. Then, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Harris talked about the importance of small businesses.
A senior campaign official tells NewsNation that the Harris campaign is seeing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s edge on the economy eroding. When it comes to who would handle the economy better, Harris is leading Trump in some recent polls for the first time. In others, while Harris is still trailing Trump, she was able to close the gap that existed between him and President Joe Biden, who was the Democratic nominee before dropping out of the race this year.
In Pennsylvania, where Harris is speaking, Decision Desk HQ shows she has a 53% chance of winning compared to Trump’s 47%.
