Lara Trump on debate mics: ‘We are just simply following the rules’
- RNC co-chair says Donald Trump doesn’t need a lot of debate prep
- Campaign opted to go with muted mics like the first debate
- Harris campaign wanted ‘hot mics’ throughout the debate
(NewsNation) — Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee, says her father-in-law, Donald Trump, doesn’t need a lot of intense preparation for Tuesday’s debate with Kamala Harris.
“He does interviews. He does press conferences. Donald Trump is out there constantly taking questions, fielding questions. And that is how he prepares for this debate,” Trump told NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday.”
“He doesn’t have to prepare in the same way Kamala does,” she added.
Lara Trump also defended the campaign’s opposition to changing the rules from the first presidential debate to allow both candidates’ microphones to be “hot” during the encounter.
“We are just simply following the rules that were put in place the first time … with the first candidate,” referring to the June 27 debate that eventually led President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race and back Harris.
“We already agreed to a whole set of rules. We also agreed to several debates. So far, we’ve only heard from Kamala Harris that she’ll do one. Donald Trump wants more than one,” she said. “He thinks the American people deserve to see both of these candidates as often as possible answering as many questions as possible.”
Lara Trump also said she’s confident that the former president will successfully contrast his record in the White House with Harris’ tenure in the Biden administration.
“You’re going to have one person, with Donald Trump, who has done the job of president of the United States, and done it successfully, versus Kamala Harris, who, on the other hand, has been vice president for nearly four years, and look where we are in this country,” she said.
