‘Information wants to be free’: Media analyst on Trump doc leaks
- Leaked Trump campaign docs shared with NYT, Politico, Washington Post
- News outlets are not publishing the leaked materials
- Media contributor wouldn't be shocked if some information gets out anyway
(NewsNation) — NewsNation media contributor Colby Hall says news outlets sitting on leaked Trump campaign documents instead of publishing them is the right thing to do.
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign claims Iranian hackers are behind the leaks, which came one day after a Microsoft report detailed an effort by an Iranian military intelligence unit to compromise an email account of a former senior adviser to a presidential campaign.
Hall told “NewsNation Now” that the decision by The New York Times, Politico and The Washington Post to not publish all of these leaked materials is in contrast with the publishing of leaked materials that hurt former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s campaign in 2016.
“At face value, it seems like sort of an apparent double standard that the media would report on hacked information they received in 2016 that hurt Hillary Clinton and are now not doing the same to Trump,” Hall said. “Another layer of irony here is that Trump loves to lash out at the fake news media, but Politico, The Washington Post and The New York Times, they’re all really doing Trump a solid here.”
Hall also said that he wouldn’t be shocked if some of these materials or other materials leaked out anyway, especially as the election approaches.
“A lot of these entities, they really want to sow discord and discontent,” Hall said. “I think if there’s one thing that we can be certain on, it’s that there will be more discord and discontent done by both candidates and bad actors on the international stage.”
