(NewsNation) — The chairman of the Republican National Committee dismissed recent polls showing Vice President Kamala Harris connecting better with voters than former President Donald Trump, arguing that the American people “do not know her record.”
In a Tuesday interview on “The Hill on NewsNation,” RNC Chairman Michael Whatley claimed that once voters learn about Harris’ positions on issues including gun control and immigration, they will “vote accordingly.”
“Kamala Harris is polling as a generic Democrat because the American people do not know her record,” Whatley said. “They have not had a chance to hear her talk. She still has not had an opportunity to defend or run away from her record.”
The comments come as recent polls have suggested Harris is outpacing Trump in terms of who the public feels “cares about people like you.”
Whatley argued that this is because Harris’ “handlers will not let her talk to the media” and “let her have a sit-down.”
However, Whatley expressed confidence that Trump and other Republican candidates will be able to directly communicate their message to voters in key battleground states in the coming weeks.
“Donald Trump and JD Vance are going to go out and they’re going to talk directly to the American people, like they are doing this week,” Whatley told NewsNation, referencing Trump’s upcoming campaign stops in Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada.
The RNC chairman also left the door open for a potential alliance between the Trump campaign and the independent bid of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., saying the campaign would “welcome” Kennedy and his supporters.
