(NewsNation) — South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary election Saturday will prove to be a pivotal moment for former Gov. Nikki Haley.
Haley has struggled to gain traction in her home state but has vowed to stay in the race despite trailing former President Donald Trump by more than 30 points in polling averages.
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a vocal supporter of Haley, joined “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” to discuss the candidate’s best-case scenario for the upcoming primary.
“The most important point is Nikki is going on to Super Tuesday,” Sununu said. “So rather lose by 50 or lose by one, Trump’s gonna claim that it was a landslide no matter what. But Nikki is the one raising the money, has the resources and is going to make sure that Republicans across this country have a choice.”
Trump is looking to complete an early state sweep after scoring big wins in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada.
For Haley, who was twice elected South Carolina governor and then served as Trump’s U.N. ambassador, she has a chance to narrow the margin and dampen Trump’s momentum.
“At the end of the day, this is all about making sure that the Republican voters have a choice,” Sununu said. “She’s raising a lot of money, regardless of what the polls are and what the final results are.”
Sununu said Haley is focused on doing well enough to make the March 5 Super Tuesday slate somewhat competitive against Trump.
“That’s what people want. They don’t want party elites. They don’t want a primary just coming down to one or two states. It really should come down to a large number of states, a large number of voters, so they can have their say.”
