(NewsNation) — Two men who were shot at Trump rally in Pennsylvania have been upgraded from critical to serious condition, according to Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital.
The hospital said James Copenhaver and David Dutch are now considered in serious condition as of Wednesday.
At a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a man opened fire in an attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Trump received a minor injury while one attendee was killed and Copenhaver and Dutch were critically injured.
Following the shooting, the Secret Service has been under scrutiny by lawmakers and the public who want to know how a man with a gun managed to get on a rooftop less than 200 yards from where the former president was speaking.
The rooftop was outside of the security perimeter set by the Secret Service. There have been conflicting reports about which law enforcement agency was meant to be patrolling the area.
A Secret Service counterassault team shot 20-year-old Thomas Michael Crooks but not before he fired multiple shots.
The shooting is being investigated as an assassination attempt. So far, investigators have not found any information to suggest what motivated Crooks to act.
In addition to questions about Secret Service protocols, the shooting led to calls for a cooling of rhetoric in the election, which has been increasingly divisive.
The shooting also comes as authorities have warned of a heightened risk for political violence leading up to the election, with a recent FBI bulletin warning of possible retaliatory attacks for the rally shooting.
