(NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump promised to release all remaining sealed documents related to the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy if he is reelected.

Trump made the statement at a rally over the weekend, reigniting speculation about what those documents from the Warren Commission, which investigated the assassination back in 1964, might reveal.

Kennedy documents set for release

Congress passed a law in 1992 intending to put to rest questions about the assassination by declassifying records and making them all available by October 2017.

Trump released more than 50,000 documents during his administration, but some 3,000 redacted records remain sealed today. Officials say it’s due to national security concerns.

President Joe Biden also cleared the way for additional documents to be released, but left it up to individual agencies to decide.

According to Trump, if he wins the 2024 election, a new “panel of experts” will work to release any and all remaining sealed Kennedy documents.

Trump promises to release remaining docs

“I am announcing tonight that upon my election I will establish a new independent presidential commission on assassination attempts, and they will be tasked with releasing all the remaining documents relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy,” Trump said at the rally.

Trump’s pledge came as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., JFK’s nephew, suspended his presidential campaign on Friday and gave his endorsement to the former president.

While most historians believe that most of what has been released about the Kennedy assassination attempt has painted a complete picture, some conspiracy theories about his death remain.

It’s still argued that the CIA may have been aware of assassin Lee Harvey Oswald perhaps as much as a year before the assassination. However, the CIA has said Oswald was not working with the agency.
