4 people at RNC in Charlotte test positive for COVID-19

CHARLOTTE, N.C (NewsNation) — Two attendees and two support staff at the Republican National Convention tested positive for COVID-19, Mecklenburg County officials announced Friday.

Those who tested positive at the event were immediately isolated. Mecklenburg County Public Health officials said 792 COVID-19 tests were conducted among individuals attending or providing support to the RNC.

Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Gibbie Harris issued a statement regarding zero coronavirus cases as of Tuesday. Those results have since changed.

Hundreds of delegates gathered in Charlotte Monday for day one of the RNC, which included speeches from President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

By Thursday evening there were 24,952 cases of COVID-19 and 290 virus-related deaths have been reported among Mecklenburg County residents

County leaders said since early August, at least 62 cases of COVID-19 among residents were connected to institutions of higher education.

Masks were required at the RNC in Charlotte, however some attendees were seen not wearing them.
