(NewsNation) — Four states held primary elections Tuesday, some of which were seen as potential bellwethers for the November general election.

Voters in the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont and Connecticut headed to the polls to decide on Senate, House and gubernatorial nominees.

The races featured both a special election and primary in one congressional district, as well as more contests that will test the influence of former President Donald Trump.

The results pages were updated through the night as results were tabulated and races were called.

Results highlights
  • In a changing of the guard in Vermont, U.S. Rep. Peter Welch won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate to replace Patrick Leahy, who is retiring. Leahy was elected in 1974. Welch is expected to cruise to victory in November.
  • Also in Vermont, according to Decision Desk HQ, State Sen. Becca Balint won the Democratic nomination for the state’s at-large House seat. If successful in November, Balint will become the first woman to represent Vermont in Congress.
  • After his opponents cleared the field for him in recent weeks, Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes won the state’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. He’ll face incumbent Republican Ron Johnson in the fall, a key race in the battle for control over Congress.
  • Also in Wisconsin, State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos eked out a victory against his Trump-backed opponent, Adam Steen. Trump endorsed Steen after Vos refused to decertify the state’s 2020 election results.
  • Another Trump-endorsed candidate, Tim Michels, won his race in Wisconsin’s Republican gubernatorial primary, according to Decision Desk HQ. He’ll face incumbent Tony Evers in November.
