(NewsNation) — The group No Labels has filed a complaint with the Department of Justice regarding what it says is an effort to shut down its attempts to secure ballot access for the 2024 presidential election.
In a letter sent earlier this month, leaders of No Labels asked the DOJ to investigate this as a criminal matter, as they say there’s evidence a group of activists and party officials have participated in an alleged illegal conspiracy to use intimidation, harassment and fear against its representatives, donors and potential candidates.
One example of this, No Labels wrote, is audio recently published by Semafor where a person described how they planned to dissuade candidates from appearing on a No Labels ticket.
No Labels’ executive director, Margaret White, said in an article published by NewsNation partner The Hill that the group is on the ballot in 14 states, with plans to secure 13 more.
Currently, the group is still deciding on a possible unity ticket.
Although a third-party candidate would likely not win the White House in the 2024 election, another option has been on the minds of many Americans, according to recent polling.
Data from FiveThirtyEight shows both former President Donald Trump, a Republican, and Democratic incumbent President Joe Biden are under 45% for their job approval ratings. A December Associated Press poll also showed 68% of voters are not looking forward to a potential Biden-Trump rematch.
That means third-party candidates could have an outsized role this election cycle, which some fear could hurt both Biden and Trump.
“One, the American people want another choice for president this year,” Joe Lieberman, founding member of No Labels and a former senator, said Thursday. “Two, No Labels is working to provide that choice to America’s voters. And three, no one in our country has a right to prevent that choice from being offered to the voters.”
