WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday honored veterans of the Bay of Pigs invasion nearly 60 years ago.
Trump is set to deliver remarks from the White House at 11 a.m. ET. The president aims to honor the veterans who fought in the United States’ failed attempt to overthrow the Cuban government in the 1961 invasion.
Last week, Trump tweeted, “Remember, Miami Cubans gave me the highly honored Bay of Pigs Award for all I have done for our great Cuban Population!”
The Associated Press reported that Trump received an endorsement in 2016 from the Bay of Pigs Veteran Association, the first ever from the group. However, the AP found that no such award comes with it.
Trump’s Democratic challenger Joe Biden is campaigning in North Carolina Wednesday.
