(NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump said his lawyers did a great job after the Supreme Court heard arguments over an attempt to remove him from Colorado’s ballot.
The remarks came as the former president delivered remarks on a familiar range of issues, from his views on foreign policy to criticism of the court cases against him.
Trump has asked the Justices to reverse a decision from the Colorado Supreme Court that removed him from the 2024 Republican primary ballot.
Colorado removed Trump from the ballot based on Article III of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prevents those who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion after taking an oath to the U.S. from holding office. There is an exception if two-thirds of Congress votes to allow someone otherwise disqualified to take office.
The 14th Amendment was added in the wake of the Civil War, with the provision added to avoid having those who supported the Confederacy elected to state or federal office and acting as an obstructionist force in government.
Trump’s lawyers argue that Article III doesn’t apply because he didn’t lead an insurrection. In other legal cases, his attorneys have based arguments on the fact that while Trump was impeached twice by the House of Representatives, he was acquitted by the Senate.
Colorado is not the only state to seek to ban Trump from the ballot. Maine has also removed him and there are cases attempting to remove in underway in California, Texas and New York.
The Supreme Court is expected to rule quickly on the issue, with an opinion potentially coming as soon as a day after arguments.
