(NewsNation) — A former U.S. Secret Service (USSS) agent believes the investigation into law enforcement’s response to former President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination will likely uncover “a lot of mistakes.”
“I think, with any significant security failure in the overall plan, it’s going to unveil further cracks in the system that day,” former USSS agent Charles Marino said on “NewsNation Now.”
The FBI is investigating the shooting, which killed one rallygoer and seriously injured two others, as an act of domestic terrorism. The director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, who had served as Secret Service director since August 2022, resigned Tuesday.
Marino said that was the right move on Cheatle’s part.
“At the end of the day, the Secret Service still owns this,” Marino said. “I think the former director was right to say that we need to take the head on this — being the Secret Service; they’re responsible for the plan creation and for the effective implementation of that plan. Full stop.”
The 20-year-old shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to get within 157 yards of the stage where the former president was speaking when he opened fire. That’s despite a threat on Trump’s life from Iran that led to additional security for the former president in the days before the rally.
