White House after Mayorkas markup: GOP wants to ‘impeach somebody…anybody’
The White House released a memo Wednesday arguing that “House Republicans have gone on a tear” after the House Homeland Security Committee marked up impeachment articles against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“As House Republicans have plowed ahead with their baseless and unconstitutional impeachment stunt against Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, it’s worth remembering: Congressional Republicans have been vowing to impeach somebody…anybody…seriously just fill-in-the-blank-here…since before they even took the majority in the House,” White House spokesperson for investigations Ian Sams said in a memo first shared exclusively with The Hill.
He highlighted that some House Republicans have pushed to impeach President Biden as well as threatened to impeach Vice President Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Attorney General Merrick Garland, among others from the administration.
The House Homeland Security Committee marked up articles of impeachment Tuesday accusing Mayorkas of failing to follow immigration laws, earning criticism from Democrats — and some Republicans — who argue the GOP is falling short of the constitutional standards to remove a Cabinet official.
The articles of impeachment could hit the floor next week.
Sams argued in the memo that Republicans have admitted “their impeachment fervor is all about political payback” and that their investigations don’t have substance.
“House Republicans’ repeated stunts debase a measure as constitutionally grave as impeachment for the sake of pursuing the far-right politics of revenge. Instead of working with President Biden and his Cabinet on real solutions for the American people, they have resorted to these finger-pointing, partisan blame games that lay bare just how extreme they have become,” Sams said.
