New ‘tiny-armed’ dinosaur discovered in Argentina
- The dinosaur was named 'Koleken inakayali'
- New species is a theropod dinosaur like the 'Tyrannosaurus rex'
- New dinosaur had 'rapid evolutionary changes,' researchers said
(NewsNation) — Paleontologists have discovered a new species of tiny-armed dinosaurs in Argentina.
A team of paleontologists from Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas and The Chinese University of Hong Kong made the finding and called the new species “Koleken inakayali,” reported science publication Phys.org.
Researchers say it falls within the abelisaurid group of theropod dinosaurs, according to their findings.
The remains, which were dated to approximately 70 million years ago, were found in the La Colonia Formation in east Argentina, a geological formation that dates back to the late Cretaceous period, Phys reported.
The newly found dinosaur was “bipedal and had extremely tiny arms,” the outlet reported. Paleontologists also found evidence of “rapid evolutionary changes during some spans of time” in the creature, suggesting that abelisaurids were more diverse than researchers thought, according to the findings.
Abelisaurid dinosaurs were a kind of theropod dinosaurs, which were hollow-boned and had three toes and claws on each limb, according to the University of California Museum of Paleontology. Theropods were the largest terrestrial carnivores and included the Tyrannosaurus rex, according to the organization.
Therapods have been found in many parts of South America, Africa, India and Madagascar, reported Phys.org.
