(NewsNation) — Houston, we have a solution.
The two NASA astronauts who’ve been stranded in space for months are finally coming home.
Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore could be back on Earth as early as Tuesday, but that will depend upon weather conditions.
NASA announced Sunday that its team, along with a team from SpaceX, are now targeting an earlier return due to favorable conditions.
Just before 11 p.m. ET on Monday, the hatch on the return capsule will begin to close before undocking begins at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
There, the journey back to Earth begins. Wilmore and Williams are expected to splash down into Florida waters by 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
It would end a lengthy ordeal for the pair, who were initially meant to return home after eight days on the Boeing Starliner, the same rocket that took them to space.
Amid a slew of issues, the Starliner became unviable. The SpaceX capsule was sent as a replacement, but multiple interruptions delayed their return.
