FRISCO - The Kansas City Chiefs aren't even 24 hours removed from their second consecutive Super Bowl championship, and we're already talking about their potential to make history.
With a third Super Bowl in a row, the Chiefs can become the first team in NFL history to accomplish the feat. As talk turns to next season the Cowboys are one of 31 other teams looking to the calendar for their next opportunity to hoist a Lombardi Trophy.
While it might be a tad early, we've already got power rankings from ESPN for the start of 2024. It's early because we still have free agency and the upcoming NFL Draft to look forward to, which will change rosters for each team. Yet, here we are.
ESPN has the Cowboys at No. 7 to start the year, with the following explanation. …
7. Dallas Cowboys
2023 record: 12-5
Offseason in three words: One more try
"With coach Mike McCarthy going into the last year of his contract and Dak Prescott potentially in the same boat, the Cowboys will try to end their Super Bowl drought next season and need to prepare this offseason to do it. The Cowboys have won 36 regular-season games the past three years but just one playoff game.
"If McCarthy can't find the playoff success he had early in his time with the Packers and Prescott can't break through past the divisional round for the first time in his career, the Cowboys could be looking at a complete renovation in 2025. No overhaul is expected this offseason, but the pressure to build a Super Bowl team is on. -- Todd Archer"
Interestingly, neither Super Bowl participant is No. 1, as the losers of the AFC championship game can claim that spot - the Baltimore Ravens.
The Chiefs and 49ers are Nos. 2 and 3 respectively, while the Lions and Bills round out the top 5.
Ahead of the Cowboys at No. 6 are the Miami Dolphins, meaning the Cowboys appear to be the third-best NFC team on the list. NFC East rival Philadelphia is just behind Dallas at No. 8, followed by the Texans at No. 9, then the Packers to round out the Top 10.
