(NewsNation) — Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, criticized President Joe Biden on Sunday, saying his words don’t align with his actions.

Gonzales joined “The Hill Sunday” and responded to the president’s frustration over a defeated border bill. The president called on Congress Thursday during his State of the Union address to send him the bipartisan border bill, saying, “Get this bill done. We need to act now.”

Biden’s remarks during Thursday’s State of the Union address spurred pushback from Republicans.

“It’s easy to point blame…the facts are the Senate could not get the bill on the floor to even vote on it,” Gonzales told The Hill’s Chris Stirewalt on Sunday.

Gonzales is headed toward a May runoff election to retain his seat in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, according to DecisionDesk HQ.

The Republican politician was among those who criticized the bill for “allowing 5,000 people to come over illegally.”

“That number should always be zero,” he said.

The bill would have allowed for a border shutdown if agents experienced an average of 5,000 daily migrant encounters in a week. Agents use the word encounter to describe how many people they’ve stopped trying to enter the country, not how many people are released.
