(NewsNation) — For those wanting to take a well-earned getaway through November may want to consider taking extra precaution.

According to NewsNation’s travel editor Peter Greenberg, preparation is key to ensuring you have the best possible outcome; irrespective of if a hurricane impacts your trip.

“It’s not about avoiding [hurricanes], it’s about preparing for them,” Greenberg said on “Morning in America” Sunday.

“The way you prepare for that is with trip cancelation and interruption insurance when you actually buy your trip. Now, there are a couple of rules about this; you can’t buy the insurance once a hurricane is officially named.

“It’s like buying fire insurance after the second floor catches fire. But number two, you have to understand the policy language, and you’re not going to get that if you book it online. Never book insurance online.”

Instead, Greenberg advises using a travel agent or travel advisor to ensure you are adequately covered. Expenses covered by hurricane insurance can include if airports are closed, airlines are not operational, or if there is mandatory evacuations.

What’s more, there is often coverage if you are on vacation and cannot leave the area you are in.

“They prorate the coverage based on how many days you had that were okay and how many days you had that weren’t okay,” Greenberg explained. “But most importantly, you have to understand the [policy] terms.”
