(NewsNation) — The U.S. Postal Service recognizes 11 official holidays each year, including Columbus Day, or what is in some states called Indigenous Peoples’ Day or Native American Day. This means mail and packages are not delivered and post offices are closed.
According to the postal service, the following holidays are recognized in 2024:
- New Year’s Day: Monday, Jan. 1
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, Jan. 15
- Presidents’ Day: Monday, Feb. 19
- Memorial Day: Monday, May 27
- Juneteenth National Independence Day: Wednesday, June 19
- Independence Day: Thursday, July 4
- Labor Day: Monday, Sept. 2
- Columbus Day: Monday, Oct. 14
- Veterans Day: Monday, Nov. 11
- Thanksgiving: Thursday, Nov. 28
- Christmas Day: Wednesday, Dec. 25
For MLK Jr. Day, while you shouldn’t expect to get any regular mail, the agency said Priority Mail Express will operate normally on the 15th because it runs “every day, all year, with limited exceptions.”
Major delivery companies, such as FedEx and UPS, establish their own schedules and may operate partially or entirely on federal holidays.
Amazon will also not be delivering any packages. According to the company’s website, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one of seven paid holidays for Amazon employees.
FedEx
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, FedEx services run as usual, and FedEx Office retail locations remain open.
FedEx will operate with modified service to FedEx Express and Ground Economy, according to its website. For a full list of FedEx’s operating schedule, click here.
UPS
According to UPS, there will be no package pickup or delivery on Monday, Jan. 15 for MLK Jr. Day. Some UPS Store locations may have adjusted business hours; check with your local store for details.
