(NewsNation) — New video shows agents rushing to intercept migrants who are climbing over the border wall as officials call for the construction of more barriers.

The footage shows border agents, including one in an ATV, rushing to intercept people climbing over the wall using a ladder. The migrants, who are subsequently taken into custody, resist by throwing items, including sand and water bottles, at agents.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the El Paso sector, where illegal crossings have remained steady despite an overall drop in numbers along the southwest border. The Texas Department of Public Safety provided aerial support during the incident under Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star.

Construction of a border wall along the southern border is ongoing, while parts of the wall remain unfinished. Those who want to see construction completed include politicians on both sides of the aisle.

Democratic Val Verde County, Texas, Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez is one of those on the left who supports Abbott’s construction of a border wall.

His county shares 110 miles with Mexico and he’s no stranger to the border crisis, as Del Rio, Texas, was ground zero for the Haitian immigration crisis in 2021. While he recognizes many are coming to the U.S. in hopes of a better life, he also fears some people are coming for nefarious purposes.

“You know, within that bunch, you know, they’re probably people looking for a better way of life. But those that don’t want to get caught? It causes concern,” Martinez told NewsNation.

Martinez said he’s eager for the wall to be completed, which is currently unstable and made largely of chicken wire, which isn’t helping much.

Along the border, materials tell a story of politics over several administrations. A black iron fence that was put up by former President George W. Bush was moved back several yards to accommodate building a wall under the administration of former President Donald Trump.

That project was halted by President Joe Biden, though materials for the Trump barrier remain on site.

“I wish that were just finished this structure here to where it’s not an eyesore, you got basically three different types of fence that are that are standing here. So you know, just one continuous fence, that would be great,” Martinez said.

Martinez told NewsNation the wall isn’t a political issue, it’s a national security issue. He said he supports what Abbott is doing because it protects his community and the nation.

“I appreciate what Governor Abbott is doing to the west of us,” Martinez said. “Those efforts will protect our community, will help keep our community safe. I know there’s still some gaps within that fence, so hopefully technology will cover those gaps to where people can respond or agents can respond.”

The Biden administration promised it would not build another foot of wall when Biden took office, even saying some of the wall would be torn down.

After increasing numbers of illegal crossings, the administration is now building a barrier in Starr County, Texas, which is in the valley and has plans to do additional work in other places, including Val Verde County.

It’s not clear how that work will overlap with border barrier work being done by Abbott, some of which has been challenged in court.

Border control has also been a contentious issue during the 2024 election campaign, with Republicans blaming the Biden administration’s policies for the increase in people crossing between ports of entry. The Biden administration has pushed back, pointing to Congress’ duty to pass immigration reform.

A recent package, drafted as a bipartisan deal, would have increased funding for border control and enforcement as well as give the president additional authority to close the border between crossings. It has been voted down by Republicans two times.

NewsNation reached out to the Biden administration for comment and did not get a response.
