High-ranking cartel member’s arrest may spark violence: Memo
- The Cartel del Noreste is involved in various criminal activities
- The cartel operates in Mexico, the U.S., Colombia and Guatemala
- Border agents are urged to use caution in encounters
(NewsNation) — The arrest of a high-ranking member of a Mexican drug cartel has led border officials to issue a warning of possible violence at the U.S.-Mexico border, NewsNation has learned.
In a memo obtained by NewsNation, officials with the Laredo Sector Intelligence Unit said the arrest of a top member of the Cartel del Noreste on Tuesday may increase violence at the border in the form of retaliatory attacks, the memo said.
The memo did not identify the cartel member, who was arrested by Mexican officials in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas on Tuesday.
The memo warns border agents are encouraged to practice caution when encountering military-aged undocumented non-citizens along the border. The memo also warned that Cartel del Noreste combatants attempt to cross the border illegally into the United States.
The memo said that the situation will continue to be monitored and updates will be provided as they become available.
The Cartel de Noreste, more commonly known as the Northeast Cartel, was formed in 2014 and is involved in a number of criminal activities. The cartel’s main base is located in Nuevo Laredo, but the criminal organization is known to operate in the U.S. as well as Honduras, Guatemala and Colombia.
