(NewsNation) — Law enforcement members from upstate New York are visiting the southern border asking local officials for tips on handling the increase in migrants coming in from Canada.

People from Latin America are increasingly making the longer trek into the U.S. from the northern border. Authorities say many times, they just are not prepared for the weather and the terrain. To learn more about how to deal with this, sheriffs from New York rode along with the Cochise County Sheriff’s criminal interdiction team as well as NewsNation’s Ali Bradley.

Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone says he came to the southern border to figure out the issues firsthand and make some changes out north.

“In New York, we hear a lot about the drug trafficking,” Quattrone said. “And we’re just now starting to talk a little bit more about the people smuggling … seeing some of the videos yesterday that the interdiction team has participated in was eye-opening for me.”
