University of Memphis to build sports facility in honor of Eliza Fletcher
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Memphis is raising funds to create the Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the memory of Eliza Fletcher.
Fletcher was kidnapped and killed while out on a morning run in 2022. Cleotha Abston-Henderson, the man accused of the crimes, will face trial on February 10, 2025.
Fletcher previously played soccer for the University of Memphis. According to the university press release, the new facility will serve as the new home for the university’s women’s
and men’s soccer and track and field teams, creating a space that reflects Liza’s passion and dedication.
Now, fundraising efforts are underway for The Liza’s Light University of Memphis Soccer and Track Stadium Fund. The first phase of the project is working to raise $7 million to build the grandstand, press box, and locker rooms.
Future phases will include “premier facilities designed to empower excellence on and off the field.”
