LAPLACE, LA (NewsNation Now) — A Louisiana man attacked four people with a machete, killing two people, on Sunday, a local sheriff said.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff said Oscar Urias, 23, attacked and killed his girlfriend and her sister, as well as attacked his siblings— the incidents happened in two locations as his victims tried to flee.

Urias had been renting a home in LaPlace with his girlfriend Elizabeth Tornabene, 31, and her sister, 15, for about a month.

“This was a very vicious attack,” Sheriff Michael Tregre told NewsNation affiliate WGNO.

In the investigation, officers learned Urias and the family members were talking in the living
room, then Urias went into the bedroom. Tornabene followed him. Urias’ siblings are from Baton Rouge and were in town visiting for the weekend.

Shortly after, Urias, wearing a mask and wielding two knives, exited the bedroom with Tornabene. Suddenly, he attacked Tornabene and killed her. Urias then began stabbing his 17-year-old sister.

As Tornabene’s sister and Urias’ 15-year-old brother fled the house, Urias chased them and managed to capture Tornabene’s sister, stabbing her in a nearby open garage.

Officers located Urias in the garage, ordered him to drop the knives, and he surrendered to
police.

After the attacks, Urias was arrested for the murder of Tornabene and her sister, as well as the attack on his sister and brother.

Urias’ sister is now in serious condition at University Hospital.

Urias’ 15-year-old brother attempted to save Tornabene’s sister when he fled. He was treated and released from the hospital.

Urias was charged with two felony counts of first degree murder and two counts of attempted first degree murder. No bond has been set yet. The investigation is ongoing, including whether drugs were involved.

“There will be a blood analysis done,” Sheriff Tregre said.

This attack made neighbors feel uneasy.

“This is crazy. I’m glad my kids were alright and my neighborhood is alright and that they got him,” Joseph Moseman said.
