GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (NewsNation Now) — An emergency medical service in rural Kentucky is using some high-tech equipment to clean their ambulances during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ambulances in Greenup County normally would take between 30-45 minutes to clean and disinfect. But thanks to a new Lantern UV Disinfection System, the job can be done in as little as 5 minutes, NewsNation affiliate WOWK reported.
The whole process is quick and easy for the EMTs, according to Greenup County EMA Director Garth Wireman.
“They just plug it into an electric outlet, they push a start button, that gives them 30 seconds to exit the truck and shut all the doors,” Wireman said. “Whenever that 30 seconds is up, it will come on and the light will run for 5 minutes.”
The “Lantern” was donated to the Greenup County Emergency Management Office by Kentucky Healthcare Coalitions.
It will also be used by local police and fire departments to keep those fighting the pandemic safe while on the job.
