ST. LOUIS (NewsNation Now) — A father of four was shot and killed last month by a man whom he helped out of a crashed vehicle.

Staveion Durham, 27 was riding a motorized scooter near the intersection of Riverview and Switzer on the evening of Oct. 12 when he ran out of gas. While waiting on a friend to bring him gas, Durham saw a vehicle crash into another vehicle and slam into a pole.

Durham’s father told NewsNation affiliate KTVI, his son pulled a 25-year-old man from the crashed vehicle, and when he did, the man pulled a gun on him.

At that time, Staveion’s girlfriend and a friend had arrived to take him to get gas. Staveion’s friend helped subdue the man who pulled the gun on Staveion and took that gun, but the man from the crash had a second gun.

Durham’s father said his son’s friend began shooting at the crash victim and the two exchanged gunfire. The friend fled the scene and the crash victim shot and killed Staveion.

“Staveion got shot in the finger and in the chest, so that lets me know he had his hands up probably pleading with the guy and letting him know he didn’t have anything to do with it,” Stacy Durham said. “He got killed by the person that he helped.”

The man from the crashed car was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries then released.

Investigators with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said they believe the shooting is self-defense and justified.

However, Durham’s father believes the self-defense claim works against his son’s friend who started the shooting but not for Staveion.

Police are asking if you know anything about the shooting to contact the department’s homicide division.
