Memphis, Tenn. — A woman who had her car stolen twice in just months says she feels victimized again after learning police sold her vehicle at auction.

Samantha McCray said the gray 2010 Nissan Maxima was taken from outside her home near Tchulahoma and Shelby Drive last fall but recovered after someone sold it on Facebook Marketplace.

It was taken a second time in January while parked in East Memphis. This week, McCray called detectives for an update on her case and was told her car had been in the city’s impound lot since February.

McCray said police told her they sent her a notice about the car, but it was mailed to an old address. MPD told WREG they would be looking into the matter.

“My mouth about hit the floor. I said February?” said McCray. “I called the impound lot to see what kind of condition my car was in, and when I gave her my VIN, she said the car was sold last week.”

When McCray’s car arrived at the impound lot, it was partially stripped.

She said she would have rebuilt it if given the chance. McCray said when she lost her car, she lost her only means of transportation and her job.

“I’ve been catching Ubers, Lyfts, and DoorDash,” said McCray. “I’ve been getting rides from friends. It’s a hassle, and they’ve had my car since February?”

McCray said she had also spoken with a city council member about what happened and would like some compensation for her car.

“I feel like they did me worse than the thieves did,” said McCray. “I cried that whole day.”

McCray said police have not made any arrests. If you have any information that can help investigators, call Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH.
