MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One Memphis police officer is dead and two others are hurt after being shot early Friday morning in the line of duty. One of the two suspects is also dead.

The shooting happened on Hewlett Road and Horn Lake Road in Southwest Memphis, Tennessee.

Officer Joseph McKinney died at a hospital. Another officer was taken there and police say the officer is not in critical condition. A third officer was treated on the scene.

Memphis Police say around 2 a.m., officers responded to a suspicious vehicle call at Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue. As they approached the vehicle, a suspect fired shots at the officers, who returned fire.

Two men were arrested, one at the scene, and the other after a foot chase. One of the men, who was 18 years old, has died.

The 18-year-old who was killed was previously arrested in a stolen vehicle with an illegal semi-automatic weapon.  He was charged with two stolen vehicles and a programming device used to steal cars and released without bond.

The other suspect is 17 years old and in critical condition.

“As chief of police, I am hurt right now,” Interim Police Chief C.J. Davis said. “Today we are here, not just to talk about what happened last night, but to make an appeal to our community that gun violence has to stop.”

The vehicle fled and was located in the 400 block of Hewlett Road. One suspect was captured immediately, while another ran from the scene and was found nearby, police said.
