FBI searching for serial bank robber dubbed the ‘Bare-Chested Bandit’
CHICAGO — The FBI’s Chicago Field Office is investigating a bank robbery that unfolded in the Loop on Tuesday afternoon and it may be just one of several robberies committed by a man who agents are calling the “Bare-Chested Bandit.”
Tuesday’s robbery occurred just before 4 p.m. at a Citibank in the 100 block of South Michigan Avenue, and FBI officials believe it is the third bank robbery conducted by the same man at the same Loop bank since mid-September.
Agents are now offering a $1,000 reward for information that could lead directly to his arrest and conviction.
The string of robberies began just before 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, when the man entered the bank and displayed a demand note that implied to tellers he was armed. The perpetrator was seen wearing a black and white patterned hoodie, black pants, and black shoes.
The man was later spotted on CTA surveillance cameras standing shirtless.
According to agents, while the man has worn a different disguise during each robbery, the incident that unfolded on Sept. 16, was the first time in recent years that agents said a suspect was seen changing clothes on public transportation.
Another robbery unfolded just days later on Thursday, Sept. 19, when a man who was seen wearing a green hat, sunglasses and a black zip-up hoodie held up the bank just before 2:30 p.m.
Agents said Tuesday’s robbery, unfolded just before 4 p.m. The perpetrator entered the bank and approached a teller before passing them a note and demanding funds. Agents said the suspect also made a violent threat before taking the money and fleeing the scene.
During Tuesday’s robbery, the man was spotted wearing a dark plaid jacket, a white collared shirt, light-colored jeans, a black hat, mirrored black-frame sunglasses and black and white athletic shoes.
Surveillance photos provided by the FBI on Wednesday show the man running from the scene of Tuesday’s robbery.
Authorities described the perpetrator as a man between 30 to 40 years of age, who stands either 5-foot-6 or 5-foot-7 and has a medium build. The man also has an armband tattoo on the upper part of his right arm.
