CLEVELAND (NewsNation Now) — Cleveland police are seeking a suspect in a shooting that killed the grandson of the city’s mayor Sunday night.

Police found the body of Frank Q. Jackson, 24, near a public housing project in the city. They released little information about what happened.

NewsNation affiliate WJW learned a female told officials that the mayor’s grandson asked her to drop him off in the area.

According to police records, moments after he got out of the vehicle someone shot him. The suspect fled.

Investigators taped off an area near one of the buildings, according to local media reports.

Local media also said Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson, the victim’s grandfather, police officers and an agent from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms arrived at the scene late on Sunday.

Frank Q. Jackson was free on $10,000 bond while he awaited a court appearance for felonious assault and failure to comply with police charges. Jackson is accused of trying to flee from his own car and dragging a police officer in January.

The grandson pleaded guilty in 2019 to misdemeanor assault stemming from a fight with his then-girlfriend. He was sentenced to 18 months probation.

Cleveland City Council offered their condolences in a statement:

“We offer our deepest sympathies to Mayor Frank G. Jackson and his family for the death of his 24-year-old grandson Frank Q. Jackson last night. Cleveland Police are investigating, and we believe the person or persons responsible will be apprehended and brought to justice.”

The Associated Press, Reuters and NewsNation affiliate WJW contributed to this report.
