HAMMOND, Ind. (News Nation/WGN) — A two-year-old Hammond girl died Friday after she was caught in crossfire and shot in the head on Wednesday.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., the girl, who authorities have identified as “Jo Jo,” died from her injuries.

Neighbors say a gunfight broke out at the Kennedy Crossing Apartments in Hammond around 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

“I live on the ground floor and for fear of myself and my children I didn’t look out the window,” said a neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous.

When police arrived, they found a mother and her two-year-old daughter inside a silver Cadillac with bullet holes in the windows parked in front of the building.

The girl was rushed to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the head before she was airlifted in critical condition to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

“I didn’t realize it was her until again I saw the vehicle because it’s very distinctive,” the neighbor said.

“It could have been me, or it could have been anybody else with their kids,” said Kristin Collier, a mother of two young boys who frequents the apartment complex.

Collier was moved to tears when she heard what happened.

“It’s just so crazy out here, these babies man, they’re not even getting to live,” she said.

Police say the mother and daughter were caught in the middle of the crossfire as two men were shooting at each other. On Thursday, evidence markers littered the grass outside of the complex.

“I just can’t imagine the pain that they’re feeling and just having kids you just want to protect them through anything,” Collier said.

Her mother was also taken to the hospital, although she was not struck by gunfire.

“I feel for the family because that is a god awful thing to happen to them and I really hope they catch the guy because definitely justice needs to be served,” resident Stephen Hubbard said.
