(NewsNation) — A U.S. Marine pilot is dead after a F/A-18 Hornet jet crashed in a remote area near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California late Thursday night.

No other passengers were on board, MCAS Miramar said in a statement.

“Our condolences go to the Marine’s family during this time,” MCAS Miramar said. “As a matter of policy, identities of service members are not released until 24 hours after all next-of-kin notifications have been completed.”

Capt. Michael Scaccia, a spokesperson for MCAS Miramar told NewsNation there was no damage to government property.

The incident is being investigated, Scaccia said.

Mónica Muñoz, media services manager for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, told Nexstar’s KSWB that crews responded to the crash and worked the downed plane fire until 6 a.m. Friday.
