(NewsNation) — An Army widow is running 93 miles in Washington to raise money for families of fallen soldiers and to honor her late husband who was killed in Afghanistan.

Army Capt. John Hallett was killed by a roadside bomb 15 years ago while serving in Afghanistan. Lisa Hallett began running to deal with her grief as she also raised their children, who were aged three, one and three weeks when her husband was killed.

“Running was the space where I could go out and feel my big feelings and come home and be that mom that my children needed me to be,” she said.

Hallett told NewsNation that led to her running with other military families who had lost a loved one, honoring those killed while serving.

“Military families bond through adversity. We come together in hardship,” Hallett said. “I really felt people rally around my family so that we could come to stand on our own and not be alone.”

Since 9/11, 26,000 service members have been killed in combat. Fifteen years after her husband died, Hallett will run 150 kilometers to honor him and raise funds to support other military families.

“We’re using movement, community and remembrance to navigate the challenges of a life of service,” Hallett said. “I’m going to run 150k to honor John, to live up to the potential that he sacrificed.”
