Fish hook-stuffed dog treats found on Appalachian Trail
(WHTM) – The Pennsylvania Game Commission is warning hikers with pets on the Appalachian Trail about dog treats stuffed with fish hooks scattered along the path.
The Game Commission in the Southeast Region says over the weekend a hiker found the tainted treats near the George W. Outerbridge shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Lehigh County.
The shelter is located on the North Trail Loop leading to the shelter on State Game Lands #217.
“Items like these could prove deadly to any animal that consumes them, including wild and domesticated animals,” said the Game Commission.
If anyone has any information about the incident or locates more of these treats, you’re asked to call 1-888-PGC-WILD or 1-888-PGC-HUNT.
The Appalachian Trail is a 2,190+ mile long footpath that crosses through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. According to the National Park Service, dogs must be on a leash on the 40% of the trail that uses National Park Service-administered land.
Dogs are not allowed on portions of the Appalachian Trail that cross through Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina, Trailside Museum and Wildlife Center in New York’s Bear Mountain State Park and Baxter State Park in Maine.
