LANCASTER, Pa. (NewsNation Now) — More than 100 protested overnight in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, after authorities say a police officer fatally shot a man while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

A Lancaster officer shot and killed 27-year-old Ricardo Munoz Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. ET, according to the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office.

The office will lead an investigation into the shooting. The release stated the officer’s body camera footage showed Munoz emerging from inside the house and running towards the officer when he arrived at the residence for the call.

The news release said Munoz was brandishing a knife above his head “in clear view” and “in a threatening manner” when the officer fired at him. Munoz died at the scene and no one else was struck by gunfire, the release said.

“A police-involved shooting has significant impact on a community, as we are seeing with the large number of individuals gathering in the streets,” District Attorney Heather Adams said in the release. “However, I am asking that all reaction be tempered as the investigation is ongoing.”

A “final determination on the use of force” will be made by Adams, the news release said.

While the office launches an investigation, Lancaster Bureau of Police Chief Jarrad Berkihiser said the department is “going to be conducting our administrative personnel investigation to make sure that policy and training and use of force was properly followed.”

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, LNP | LancasterOnline reported.

NewsNation affiliate WHTM reported that dozens of protesters filled the street where Munoz was fatally shot Sunday, and many marched to the police station.

Isaac Etter, with activist group SafeHouse Lancaster, told WHTM that the protests are the result of months of frustration.

“We had a lot of issues in June with the Lancaster City Police and I think to see the lack of change in both the police force and in the city has led to the unrest that is today,” Etter said.

Lancaster police said in a statement that more than 100 protesters blocked an access ramp to the police station, locking arms in a line, throwing bottles, rocks and other objects at officers, who used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

Police also said protesters damaged a county vehicle and threw bricks into the police station and a post office.
