PROVIDENCE, R.I. (NewsNation Now) — Rhode Island authorities are searching for a man they say stole a car with a 2-month-old baby in the backseat before dropping the baby off at a storage facility.
Police said a couple pulled into a Cumberland Farms parking lot in Providence on Saturday and left the car running as they went into the store. While they were inside, a man jumped in the car and drove off with the baby in the back seat, police said.
Shortly after, the man left the baby at a storage facility and sped off again, police said. The stolen car was found later in a different location, officials said.
The baby was returned to the couple, unharmed, police said.
Winton Harris III, manager at Compass Self Storage said the baby was cold and had no blankets, but was sleeping. He immediately called police reported NewsNation affiliate WPRI.
“I noticed the package was just sitting there so I went outside and noticed it was a baby,” he said.
Providence and State Police could be seen driving around nearby Opper Street and the surrounding area around 4 p.m. Harris said investigators have the store surveillance and he believes the suspect is in his late thirties.
“It’s upsetting as a father. I’m very happy I was there to help and the child and their mother were able to get back together,” Harris said.
