(NewsNation) — An Amazon driver delivered a package to a smoke-filled garage hours before a fire engulfed the adjacent house but left without calling for help, a Massachusetts homeowner says.

Peter McArdle was on vacation over Memorial Day weekend when he received a call that his house was on fire. By the time he arrived home hours later, about three-fourths of the house was scorched, he said on NewsNation’s “Morning in America.”

McArdle looked to his home security cameras for answers.

“We were having some work done at the house on Saturday and unfortunately the workers put some combustible material in the trash receptacle outside of the garage,” he said.

The footage showed an Amazon driver wading through a smoke cloud billowing from the garbage can and filling the garage as they delivered a package and walked away.

“I think it’s common sense if you see a burning receptacle next to a house, then maybe call 911, the fire department before you go off for your next delivery,” McArdle said.

The situation could have been worse, he added, noting he’s grateful for his family’s safety.

“Hopefully the next news briefing you get from an Amazon driver is: Hero Amazon driver saves someone’s house by calling 911,” McArdle said.
