OXFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Oxford has some of the worst flood damage in the state of Connecticut with streets, bridges and even homes collapsing after historic flash flooding Sunday evening. 

The devastation is something long-time residents have never experienced or expected.

“In 15 minutes the road was just engulfed in water,” said neighbor Chris Hofmann, owner of Hofmann Home Improvement.

The small town lost two residents, 65-year-old Ethelyn Joiner and 71-year-old Audrey Rostkowski, after they were swept away by floodwaters.

Joiner’s neighbor Shannon Carr was in shock.

“Heartbreak. Utter heartbreak for her, her family, her friends,” she said.

The historic flash flooding also took away homes in Oxford. The flood waters completely knocked down a home on East Hill Road. The foundation along with everything else collapsed, sending the family’s belongings- including a children’s book- down the river.

“I got my son’s teddy bear, but we didn’t go too hard grabbing everything because we didn’t think it would come to this,” homeowner Randi Marcucio said.

Marcucio is a single mother to a 3-year-old boy, and bought the home on Mother’s Day two years ago.

“He doesn’t know, but he knows something is wrong because he hasn’t seen me in a couple days now,” Marcucio said. “I don’t know how to tell him. We lost a ball down the river and it was devastating to him.”

“It was pretty bent this morning and then it started to crack and I knew it was going to go. Just pretty unfortunate,” Hofmann said.

There are still over a dozen roads closed in Oxford as of Monday night, including part of Route 34 and Punkup Road as crews continue to work around the clock making repairs.

As for the Marcucio family, they are now working to rebuild everything and have a GoFundMe page.
